Torino Nera

Many images of Turin, of a city which no longer exists. Immigration from southern Italy, the difficult relationship between people from south and the one of the north in a gray and rainy city that in addition to work didn't offer anything else. That city fortunately has been transformed over the years, culturally and physically, in an active and modern urban center, one of the most vibrant in Italy.
The sky isn't blue now in Turin, but Turin as described by Lizzani in this 1972 film, has the same flavor of old postcards found in the attic.
A detailed description, heavy, capable of framing those places and that society. A description deep, so deep, that certain terms such as "Case Bulgare" are unknown also to has always lived in Turin and also to the experts.
These are the basics and strengths of "Torino Nera", a film that ranks among crime, thriller and melodrama. The great Carlo Lizzani is in the world of "low budget" and gives life to a movie well described, which unfortunately also has several flaws in the plot.
Weakness that arise from impossible situations created to carry on the history and from an insane comic relief. Immigration, crime and feelings tied together, sometimes screeching in the story of Rosario Rao. So big so good he loves his family, his job and believe in workers' rights. But he is imprisoned for murder. A murder very impressive, set in the "Stadio Comunale", during the football match betwewn Torino and Roma (2-0 for Torino for the record), football temple in Turin and sometimes for big concerts, completely renovated for the Olympics of 2006 and renamed "Stadio Olimpico".
The protagonist is Bud Spencer, non good in melodramatic moments, but very good of course, in action's ones, though, for ninety percent of the story he appears in flashbacks. In the chaos of the stadium, is killed Vito Mancuso, however, the gun is or was of Rao and many testify against him. Imprisoned, he forced his family composed by a woman who works very hard (Françoise Fabian) and by two clever clever and cunning sons, Raffaele and Mino (first played by Andrea Balestri star of "Le Avventure di Pinocchio" with Nino Manfredi) to belt-tightening.
The eldest son, Mino, suspicious, tries to discover the truth about his father. Helped by the lawyer Mancuso, played by the singer Nicola Di Bari, who also composed the soundtrack, the two slowly discover that the poor Rosario was caught by a treacherous game of low crime. A young lawyer and a child as detectives are not very credible, and to this we must add two other things that doesn't work well, the indifference of the police and the comic aspect of Raffaele. It seems that Lizzani understand these errors and tries to remedy pulling out the two from the story and putting into Rosario Rao, in the role of a fearless avenger.
At the end this is a movie change often atmospheres, starting from melodrama, turning briefly in the comedy, going to thriller and closing with the noir.
Based on a true story happened in Sicily, Lizzani transposes everything in the city that was the center of immigration from southern Italy. An ideal setting for such a story. A film that the director himself has defined as "modest", but important  for the future, as evidence of the period. True, very true and as we lor Turin, we invite you to visit the city to see the changes with your own eyes.
