Southern Comforts
They felt the spirit of the hills in her jugs!
Without the "s" in "Comforts" we are talking, as you know, about liqueur created in New Orleans. Buy
several bottles, and then drink them, is the only safe way to watch
another comedy soft-core "hillbilly" by Bethel Buckalew. It 'the only way to survive the boredom of a film very slow and without logic.
Buckalew
and his cinema with bucolic atmospheres, with few claim and few
clothes, shot very fast a large numbers of movies, especially in the
years 1970/71 (four, movies on the eleven directed in his career).
And
if for the other two "Country Cuzzins" and "Midnite Plowboy" we can say
that there was a vague plot to justify everything, in this we didn't find
justification for such show of naked bodies and sex scenes.
It's pretty clear then, that the director wanted to somehow follow the
road, here more than ever, of Russ Meyer, without his art, simply copy the
characteristics of two characters taken directly from "Faster Pussycat
Kill! Kill! "(An old man and his son retarded).
To achieve "Southern Comforts" it did not take much work. It needs A
car, a farmhouse, a barn and a bit 'of actors and actresses, a key part
of the film, agreeing to run naked for most of the time. So the casting becomes the main aspect and, as usual, we can say that Buckalew choose well.
Surely Monica Gayle is a great choice as well she is the star. An
actress who has starred in a large number of "b movies" soft-core, all
in the late sixties and in the seventies, as "The Erotic
Adventures of Pinocchio," "The Jezebels" Jack Hill " Nashville Girl "in addition to appearing in some main TV series as" General Hospital".
Obvoiusly there is Jack Richesin, also co-author of the script, and many others actors who have linked their career mainly
with Buckalew's films, such as John Tull, Wendy Winders or Pamella Princess,
and of course, there is the evil mind of Harry H.Novak the producer of many films "low-budget".
Novak
and Buckalew this time tell us about a group of girls traveling with a
kind of pimp and whose car stops in the more rural American country.
They
ask for hospitality in a farm in which live an old man named Colonel
and his son Junior, a mentally retarded man (here's the quote!). The
girls stop ithe n place for a while and try to convince the girls of the town
to participate in a beauty contest, without many clothes, which takes
place in the barn. But
the police are on the trail of pimps, one thing that doesn't stop the
desire for sex (lesbian and straight) shown in countless scenes and as
usual, highlighted by music.
Another film by Buckalew looking for an excuse to show naked girls. But this time it is better drink on, to forget it.
