Diary of a Cloistered Nun

Dated, ridiculous and absurd. "Mondo Cane" to modern men's eyes, looks like this. And its subject wouldn’t have place even in the worst sensationalist show of the worst regional TV. But if we try to imagine the 1962 society and the dissemination of information of the time we realize how "Mondo Cane" was surprising and innovative, and why it has so much influence on the world of cinema.
Suor Agnese del Bambino Gesù is the one who inspired this movie. And just with Google and not with a degree in theology, find out that this sister has never existed. The nunsplotation of the early seventies it seems that has already clear ideas, as much as the eclectic Domenico Paolella that at the same time and always with a script by Tonino Cervi also shot "The Nun and the Devil" with Ornella Muti.
This second foray into the genre starring a young (and beautiful) Eleonora Giorgi, who is in the midst of a breathtaking beauty cast including Catherine Spaak, Suzy Kendall, Martine Brochard and Paola Senatore. To which it’s added the experience of Giuliana Calandra, Clara Colosimo and Caterina Boratto. In short, a great cast that just reading it makes want to see the "history" of Suor Agnese del Bambino Gesù. Even she is never existed.
Unfortunately Paolella apart aesthetics doesn’t give us much more. And we do not mean just the aesthetic attractiveness of the interpreters but especially the excellent care of photography, a good direction and a clever and functional reconstruction of the environments.
A beautiful container with suggestive images and beautiful ideas, which end in a story not very effective. For over an hour nothing happen here.  There are the usual sufferings, the ideas of the society and then the convent. We know that in the monasteries (nunsploitation ones in the others who know) always happen all. Sadism, sex and various bad things. Even here, but things are much more nuanced. The mother superior is not a very bad lesbo-sadistic. But it’s a beautiful woman (Suzy Kendall) that deals with her sisters, dispensing advice and turning a blind eye on the various things that happen there. She loves the protagonist, she doesn’t force her to her pleasures. Among the sisters there is someone envious, others interested in money and some (Sister Elizabeth, played by Catherine Spaak), interested in the carnal pleasure hetero and lesbian. But in the end these "deviations" are light than others films of the genre. The end to the "one for all, all for one" female version is something transcendental that even goes against the ecclesiastical power of the place. Which, given the times is quite impossible.
Who put some pepper in history is the protagonist, Carmela Simoni or Sister Agnese (the Christ Child), played by Eleonora Giorgi. She put herself in troubles, she put fuel on the fire and she is the person who showing her most of bare flesh.
Carmela daughter of the rich family of Simoni, since newborn is promised ad wife of a child of another family. But when she reached the right age to get married she prefers Giuliano a not rich guy certainly unimportant for the political balance. Carmela instead of getting married and then have a lover, officially rejects the chosen husband. And so, the family locks her in a convent.
Stripped, a bit 'palpated, Carmela has to make the whole process to become a nun. Thirty days of isolation, prayers and other deprivations. After the "training" she come back in the cell, and gradually discovers the various vices of the sisters. And all in all not displease. After refusing to take vows the family rejects her completely and she thanks to Sister Elizabeth, once again sees her beloved Giuliano and gets pregnant. Her lover is killed, the diocese discovers that a sister is pregnant and closes the convent. But she flees and dedicates her life to helping the oppressed.
Too much good intentions her excessive for the genre and for the morbid audience (see us) that when see the combination nuns and genre cinema, expects lesbian scenes, sadomasochism and wickedness spread. And maybe it's our fault and maybe Paolella aimed simply to shot an erotic film with ecclesiastical set. Anyway boredom reigns. Luckily, in addition to what we have already said the interpreters do their duty and Giorgi, though still a newcomer can create a believable and interesting character. The only one that moves the water in this story.
